ACUPUNCTURE &
ELECTROACUPUNCTURE

Several thousand years ago, East Asian practitioners discovered that the human body forms “disharmonies” as a result of life’s mental and physical stressors. Oriental medical theory explains these disharmonies as an imbalance of opposing forces called yin and yang, which appears in the form of ailments such as chronic pain, illness, or disease.

This imbalance disrupts the movement of the body's vital energy, or qi, along the meridian pathways, which are channels through which the body's energy is thought to flow.

Acupuncture restores the smooth flow of qi, which in turn relieves the body of pain, inflammation and toxins, as well as the release of endorphins into the body’s system. By inserting and manipulating hair-thin needles at specific points, we are able to return the body to its natural balance and promote the body's ability to heal itself using this ancient medical modality.

Electroacupuncture is a modern variation of acupuncture, using electricity to enhance the benefits of this traditional therapeutic treatment. A small amount of electricity runs through the needle, emitting a subtle vibration or soft hum during treatment. Using electricity activates the body’s acupuncture points much faster than traditional acupuncture, thus providing more immediate pain relief and detoxification.

Electroacupuncture activates your sympathetic nerve fibers. By activating these fibers, your body releases endogenous opioids such as endorphins, which help to reduce pain and inflammation. The activated nerve fibers also help to reduce feelings of persistent pain, making it a viable treatment for chronic pain and stress.

CUPPING

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which the therapist applies specialized cups on your skin, creating suction to relieve pain. Traditionally, earthenware and bamboo cups are used. Modern acupuncturists and therapists use glass or plastic cups. Here at Equilibrate Acupuncture, we specialize in traditional fire and glass cupping as well as electrocupping.

When placed on an affected area, the cup’s suction increases blood flow, reducing pain and inflammation and delivering relaxation and relief, akin to a deep-tissue massage.

MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion is a type of herbal heat therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine that entails the burning of moxa, commonly known as mugwort, close to the skin’s surface.

Moxa is a medicinal plant that is said to have several health benefits, namely strengthening blood circulation and stimulating the flow of qi throughout the body, as well as:

‣ Expelling cold and dampness from the body
‣ Improving female reproductive issues such as cramping, infertility and irregularity
‣ Aiding in male reproductive issues such as impotence and improving sperm quality
‣ Stimulates the immune system to aid against viruses
‣ Regulates the digestive system
‣ Reduces numbness in fingers and toes
‣ Relieves side effects of conventional cancer treatments
‣ Eases anxiety and insomnia
‣ Provides muscle and joint relief
‣ Provides relaxation

Moxibustion is easily combined with all forms of acupuncture and Chinese medicine and is considered an equal in healing power to diet, meditation, exercise and cupping.

Traditionally, moxibustion is done by using a small amount of moxa atop key acupuncture points on the body and burned to release healing warmth into the body.

At our clinic, we use stick-on moxa, a more modern technique of moxibustion. Rolled moxa placed on a small carrier is lit, which then adheres to the skin when placed on acupuncture points.
